Manufactures will recommend lower tire pressure for one of two reasons, either to improve ride quality or to mask a handling problem. I suspect the Mazda Miata pressure mentioned by Schu was for the former. For an example of the latter, the Ford Explorer comes to mind. Ford recommended low pressure, 26 psi again I think because with higher pressure it could rollover if turned to sharply. The low pressure dropped the turning traction below the point were the tires could generate enough force to cause a rollover.
The advantages of using higher than recommended pressures are better traction (turning and stopping), improved fuel mileage, longer tire life and improved resistance to tire failure because they run cooler. The down side is rougher ride. My recommendation is that you use higher tire pressure than the minimum recommended by Saab. Currently I use 40 psi for my '00 9-5 Aero sedan and 37 for my '03 9-3 SE convertible. How high you go depends on how rough of a ride you can stand, but don't go over the max recommended by the tire manufacturer.
