Don't think problem with bent or unbalanced wheels is limited to just pre 2nd generation 900s (94-98). My 99 9-3 will do the the same (not violent shaking but annoying at varius speeds when rims are bent or out of balance. A bad alignment does not help with a high power FWD sports sedan.

That said be sure the rims are not wobbling when rotated on the lift. Make sure the tires are physically sound -no belt separation or uneven tread wear and then stark checking for bent tie rods and bad ball joints or worn bushings and other issues that compromise front end performance. I think your problem is not a design defect but merely sub-optimal service. You might try finding new rims and tires at a salavage yard and expirmenting with different wheel sizes. Road camber and grooved pavement will exacerabte any deficits with a loose or poorly aligned front end such that it is sometimes hard to diagnose a problem unless you are truly on a Truly flat and smooth stretch highway. I always go by feel in the end. A SAAB will tell you when it is out of Spec.
