The quality of the oil as displayed on the SID of a 9-3 SS is based on how the car is being driven. There is not any sort of device that is actually measuring the quality of the oil. The car's computer takes into account how the car is being driven - short trips/long trips, how many times it started cold/started warm, and many other readings. Based on this information it calculates what the condition of the oil would be. The "Time for Service" can appear anywhere from 8000 - 15,000 miles. The assumption being a low mileage driver with only short trips would trip at 8000 miles, but would likely take a year for the 'service' light to come on.
Buck is correct, if you could reset the oil quality, you never will get your scheduled maintenance paid for by Saab.
