That's EXACTLY how corrosion works. EXACTLY how batteries work, too. Corrosion makes electricity & vice-versa.
Maybe Anders has the key; if grounds are bad, current is forced thru the coolant. If there's enough of that, it drive the galvanic action, overpowering the normal voltages you'd expect from the metal's position in a galvanic series.
I've seen this happen a little differently - a long time ago we had a Fiat 128 with a bad engine ground. It grounded itself thru the clutch cable, which corroded away to nothing within a year.
