I just went from an '01 9-3 to a 04 9-5 and the 9-5 seems more solid. Both cars are relatively safe so I would go with the larger car. By the way my wife and 4 kids usually ride in a Chevy Suburban (6 people don't fit in any SAAB) I would have considered a Chevy Tahoe instead of the 9-5 if I didn't drive so much and did not want the pay for the gas. The large SUVs are very comfortable.
