Ongoing co-operation for Saab, Clarion and Per Eklund
Per Eklund, Saab and the Clarion Team Europe will continue co-operating in 2005: Per is due to change his shell for the next season and will compete in the new Saab 9-3 Aero SportSedan.
At the same time as Saab classes its new 9-3 model for competition work, the Company will continue its co-operation with the rallycross driver Per Eklund and his team, the Clarion Team Europe. The foremost evidence of the co-operation will be that next year the reigning Swedish champion will compete in a very extreme version of the Saab 9-3 Aero SportSedan, both in the Swedish and in the European Championships.
“There is much to suggest that the car will turn out to be highly competitive,” asserts Björn Berglöf, motor-sport co-ordinator at Saab Automobile in Trollhättan. He goes on: “Among other things, the regulation minimum weight of rallycross cars is to be raised from 1,120 kilos to 1,200, which is an advantage for Per Eklund's Saab, since it has already been too heavy this season by comparison with the WRC cars it competes with.”
Saab will assist Per Eklund's team in the building of racing bodies, while the final adjustment to Eklund's own-design chassis, engine and transmission will be handled entirely by the Arvika-based team. The last point is something on which SAAB lays particular stress.
“Building a racing body is always in the highest degree an engineering challenge. Materials and technical solutions must be matched,” Björn Berglöf tells us.
The special challenge, as he sees it, will be the work of manufacturing many body components in carbon fibre and other materials that are new in the context of the automotive industry.
“The competition car is being built around an original Saab 9-3 body, but modified with carbon-fibre parts. Some items will be specially designed by the team expressly to suit four-wheel drive.”
“The Saab 9-3 SportSedan is ideal for the purpose,” says Per Eklund. “The basic design of the car is decidedly sporty, with a body possessing great torsional rigidity.”
“We ourselves work with technical solutions and materials that come very close to Formula 1, so this car has every prospect of being highly competitive,” concludes Per.
So a great engineering challenge, in combination with Värmland wiliness, lies in the task of designing and building a new racing body within the limits laid down for the rallycross heavyweight class, Division 1.
By April 2005 we should be seeing the fruits of our work, with the reigning Swedish rallycross champion, Per Eklund, on the starting line with a new Saab 9-3 Aero SportSedan, while at the same time his 1997 Swedish Championship and his 1999 European Championship will be passing into history together with the old bodywork.
