Thanks Anders, I plan a flush and coolant change w/new thermostat in the spring. I think it is the sensor, as just after teh check engine light came on, I pulled over, shut the car off, let it sit a minute and restarted, the temp gauge went from bottom to top, (flicked) and then died. Idle went up to 2K as well. Of course I said a hail mary, and shut it off again, and let it sit for about 15 minutes while I got a cup of coffee and thought about options (was 4 hours from home). When I went out and restarted the car, the CEL stayed on, but all was well and has been ever since. That was about a month ago, no problems. WIth teh help of Advance, I reset the light about 350 miles ago (now) and it hasnt come on, and the gauge seemed to be operating normally all day today (lots of driving around). SO
Makes me wonder if the computers in cars are like home PC's need a reboot now and then. I wonder how many parts are flat out replaced and not need it?
All that said, where is this temp sensor, and are there more than one? I assume there is one for teh fuel/ignition system, abut another for the A/C and Radiator fan that is in the radiator itself??
