I've changed the oil on my 2001 9-3SE without ramps. You need a fairly low profile catch pan (and torso), long arms, and an aptitude for slithering.
Its much easier with ramps. Homemade wooden ones with only a few inches of rise will do (insert personal injury disclaimer here). Ramps also tilt the car, which encourages all the old oil to flow out of the drain plug -- which lies on the rear edge of the pan.
Use a 6pt socket, not 12pt, as the plug material is quite soft and easily rounded.
