It's understandable that Saab won't offer any assistance unless it's at the dealer. They have no affiliation with independents and they want an authorized point to see it. Since the car is out of warranty (presumed a non-CPO car) the next questions would be are you the original owner, do you have a complete maintenance history. Those are taken into consideration for goodwill. If you are the original owner and have all your maintenance done at a dealer, they may help. If you bought the car used at an independent with little or no maintenance history, no sense going to the dealer since it's doubtful you will get help. If "sludge" is the cause of failure, you would still need to provide the entire service history. If the maintenance was not done according to the required schedule, you will not be offered help. Hope that clarifies.
