If the noise would have started right after the timing belt was replaced I would have guessed that the new belt needed some time to "wear in" on the old pulleys. But since it is 1 1/2 year ago the belt was replaced, that is not the case.
As for driving the car? Do you feel lucky?
It could something very simple as a dry serpentine belt or pulley that would just leave you stranded if it break, needing a tow or it could be the first signs of a failing tensioner pulley which would leave you with a minumum of $3000.00 repair bill.
I wouldn't dare to promise either/or as for what causes the noise.
A rental car might be very cheap in the long run until your mechanic has a chance to look at it.
