Both a 2.3lpt at 185 hp and a 2.3T with 220hp will tolerate regular gas. For the 2002 185hp Linear the gas flap doesn't even recommend premium. Saab Trionic engine management will dial back the engine parameters so that either engine will run fine on regular.
If you consult the owners manual, I believe a 2002 was spec'd using 90 octane gas. Of all the Saab turbos made the 2.4lpt 185hp has the least to gain with premium IMO.
One unusual aspect of a Saab turbo with Trionic engine managment is that you're likely to get better fuel economy on premium. Chemically this is supposed to be impossible. If a normally aspirated engine doesn't knock on regular 87 than going with premium 91 won't get you better gas mileage. Each fuel contains the same amount of energy. With Saab turbos the Trionic retunes the engine for more power and hence better efficiency with higher ocatane, which results in better fuel economy. No solid proof, but it's my experience and many others on these BB's, better fuel mileage on premium. It's almost enough to justify the price difference.
