To check for sludge is easy. I do that for free with all the newer Saabs that comes in for an oil change.
I just a coat hanger bent in a certain way so that I can insert it through the oil drain hole and take a swab sample of the interior of the oil pan.
If nothing extra ordinary comes out except oil, than it is few chances that you have any sludge anywere else.
If the engine has sludge you can count on from about $500.00 and up to remove oil pan and valve cover to clean out and even more if the whole engine needs to be taken apart. It's a case by case scenario.
