Ignition Cassette Failure caused other problems

Yesterday, I was driving our until-then trouble-free, well-maintained 9-5 Arc wagon on the expressway when it suddenly lost power and the check engine light came on. I stopped, called our regular dealer, where we had our 60,000 mile work done 3000 miles ago, and asked what to do. He said to drive it to them. I was much closer to another Saab dealer so I took it there, instead, figuring it would help minimize the damage. By the time I got there, smoke was pouring out and quick check by the techs showed that the catalytic converter had failed. After a few hours of checking, they said the failure was caused by a faulty ignition cassette.
I know from these boards that ignition cassettes are considered normal wear items and failures are common. The dealer is quoting us about $3000 for the repairs, minus the part covered by the emissions warranty (about half, apparently). Some other items that need to be replaced are, I believe, a muffler and some O2 sensors. I'm thinking that a well-maintained car does not spontaneously ignite at 63,000 miles and that, either the cassette problem should have been found during the last regular (expensive!) maintenance, or, if it couldn't have been diagnosed, there's a design problem. In either case, I'm a bit reluctant to pay for the portion of repairs not covered by the emissions warranty.
Opinions would be appreciated! TIA.
Mark
