Shades of the 9000! Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Brake Light Failure Message, postpunk, Tue, 8 Feb 2005 05:10:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The 9000 brake light pictogram was notorious for alterting to bad brake light bulbs, when indeed they worked just fine. I haven't heard of this on the 9-5, because I assume that they addressed the sensisitivy issues of the 9000 system. However, the 'fixes' for the 9000 would still be in order.
First - have you changed any brake light or tail light bulbs recently? If so, are you sure they're the right ones? The system works by detecting current differences in the bulbs, and the wrong wattage bulb can throw it off. Also, if one accidently puts a two-filament bulb into a single filament socket, and vice versa, all hell can break (brake?) loose.
If you have replaced a bulb, but it is indeed the correct one, (wattage, type, etc.), then replace the corresponding one on the other side with the same brand. Sometimes it matters.
Next, while someone steps on the brakes, look at the lights. Do any come on dim? More importantly, do any come on that shouldn't? A turn signal light come on dimly? That's the sign of a bad ground connection to the brake light circuit board. It can be a problem on the board, or where the wire comes off and connects to the chassis ground.
