That's right, 10 hours before it broke down. New (to me) 99 9-5 SE 4cyl auto, 100k miles. I've had the car for a few days but was waiting on title before I could register it. I changed the oil (no sludge in the pan per the coat hanger test) and cleaned things up so I was ready to go when the paperwork came through. Got it today, went to DMV, on the road before noon. Fast forward to tonight - driving down a local street, coming to a stop at a light I hear a rather loud and unpleasant noise from the engine, alt light comes on, engine still running. Power steering gone, figure belt broke. Pulled into parking lot and shut down, checked engine - belt gone. Call AAA, wait 90 minutes for flatbed to show up. It starts to rain. Truck shows up, on the hook and home. All in the course of less than half a day.
I guess I get to do the short belt mod sooner than I planned - any tips? I'm guessing I may need to replace a tensioner as well. Hopefully nothing else was affected when the belt went. I hope my first half day with the car on the road is not going to be representative of the SAAB ownership experience.
