M1 0W40 carries approval for GM LL 025, along with Benz and BMW and VW approvals. Seems there's some extra safety margin in additive package, as compared to 10W30.
M1 10W40 is their new "Long Life" line of oils, claiming more anti-wear and other additives. It lacks the ILSAC GF "Starburst", presumably b/c it has too much anti-wear Phosphorous compound, but also 10W40 is *not* an ILSAC GF approved grade.
M1 5W40 carries API Diesel approvals, rather than an alphabet soup of manufacturer and gasoline engine approval agencies.
I would think that any of the three are "sturdier" than M1 10W30. My choice would be the 5W40. I think if anything is capable of handling blowby and keeping sludge particles in suspension, it would be diesel oil, based on prejudice, not information.
