Problem: 2001 Saab 95 4 cylinder Turbo engine died while driving along at approximately 40mph.
Discussion: All warning lights came on and the check engine light (CEL) came on. The car restarted approximately 20 minutes later after numerous attempts. CEL went away after numerous on/off manipulations of the ignition switch. Drove car home and it died in the driveway. The car restarted approximately 20 minutes later after numerous attempts and the CEL went away after numerous on/off manipulations of the ignition switch. I drove the car to work the next day in anticipation of taking it to the Saab dealership since it has only 36,000 miles and is under warranty. It died 4 different times before I could get it to the dealership. The restarts took 30 minutes, 10 minutes, 10 minutes, and 1 hour. Once I finally got it to the dealer they could not get it do it again after 1 ½ days of troubleshooting. Finally the service representative called and said they could not get it to die. In the meantime I had visited the SaabNet and determined it was probably the crankshaft position sensor (CKP). I suggested that they check the CKP but of course they had eliminated it because that is not the way it fails. I told them that I would not take the car back until they found the problem. I also suggested that the CKP was the problem and quoted my SaabNet information once again. The service representative called at the end of the day and guess what they found? He said it did it 3 more times and they had isolated it the CKP. Thanks to all the folks on Saabnet.
