The German-made Castrol 0w30 Syntec is nearly certainly a PAO based oil, same as Mobil 1. It is not one of the hydrocracked petroleum-based oils some call fake synthetics. Castrol 5w40 'european car forumula' made in Belgium also meets A3 requirements, and is likely also a PAO (and perhaps partly ester) based product. All other current Castrol Syntecs appear to be hydrocracked -- including any 0w30 that is not marked as 'Made in Germany'.

I've used the German Castrol 0w30 with good results. Several lab analyses of my used oil showed it held up with good wear given the fuel dilution problem present in my car at the time (which has subsequently cleared up). The GC is a thick 30w, thicker than M1 Xw30 and nearly as thick as M1 0w40 when at full operating temperature. Most would agree that thick is good in a SAAB turbo. I'm presently running a mix of 0w30 and euro 5w40, under the assumption that a little thicker than the 30 is probably better.

Also consider Esso XD3 0w40 or 0w30. I ran one interval (~7000km) of the 0w40, which gave the best results ever for my car. This is a full PAO synthetic oil that you can find at Esso distributors. I've heard that recently it became available in 4L containers as some Canadian Walmarts too. It is not available in the U.S. It is much cheaper than Castrol or Mobil 1, especially at an Esso dealer. I would use this oil for all changes, but it does not carry an A3 rating and so a warranty issue could conceivably arise (even though many dealers don't appear to use A3 oils, or even full synthetics, either!). The shear properties of XD3 more than meet those specified by A3; I suspect Esso doesn't bother to certify it as A3 because its not exported and the Canadian domestic market is too small to justify the costs of certification (but what do I know). XD3 is also available as an 0w30; both are thick for their respective weights and both have excellent additive packages suitable for heavy-duty diesels as well as gasoline engines.

I've never seen M1 0w40 or 5w40 around here (Nova Scotia).Lubrimoly, Redline and Amsoil are locally available but at nearly 2X the cost of GC
(stashed a bunch when on sale) and XD3.
