albanysaab: I have a 1999 SE V-6 w/ 89,000 km that I like very much. Hey... no engine sludge issues to worry about!

My orignal muffler is probably on its last leg . Not leaking but outer skin is gone where slush is thrown on it by the tire. OE is $600+ here in Canada. I will be shopping for a custom installed alternate I'm sure.

Last year, one my original rear shocks lost its will to live so a new set was in order. From this board, I learned a favoured replacement was the Bilstein HD type. I imported them from the US for $88 USD each... less than the OE types from the dealer here in Winnipeg. I REALLY liked the great control and stability they provided. Then winter came and I found the extra firmness at -30C plus our rutted and frost joint heaved roads were just too uncomfortable with stiffer shocks. I ordered the OE shocks from the dealer and took out the Bilsteins after about 4500 km. Fresh OEs were great in the winter and the Bilsteins are on a shelf in my garage.

I do prefer the extra control and am tempted to swap the Bilsteins in for the warmer months.... nah, I should just sell 'em. Life is too busy for seasonal shock-swapping!

Bottom line...if you like extra control and are willing to sacrifice comfort on poor roads, go with Bilsteins. If you are concerned with the most comfort, fresh OE shocks should be fine.

BTW, I do like better control and have installed the AERO swaybar upgrade kit from Taliaferro (site-sponsor) and urethane suspension bushings from Powerflex. Must be that my 50 year old butt is more sensitive to shocks :)
