car stalled at between 1/4 and 1/8 tank of gas

Hi all. I drive a Saab 9-5, 2002 Arc with 46400 miles on it.
I was driving home a few nights ago when I noticed my car lose acceleration. No warning lights or alarms of any kind. I noticed that my gas gauge read a little below 1/4 tank. In a few seconds I got normal acceleration back. I parked my car in my driveway and turned off the engine. I tried to restart my engine twice. It turned over normally and ran for about 1 sec before dying on me. So I got a gas container and filled it with about 1.6 gal of gas. After pouring the gas into my engine, I attempted to start the car again. The first attempt failed as the ones before. On the second attempt, the car started normally. I went to the gas station and filled it up and have not had problems since. I am keeping it at 1/2 tank or higher.
Is the fuel pump on a Saab 9-5 in the gas tank? If so, I'm wondering if perhaps the inlet tube below the fuel pump broke off into the fuel tank. If so, the fuel pump will now be sucking gas from a level further from the bottom of the gas tank. Thus the gas tank would have to be kept filled at a higher level to avoid stalling due to lack of gas.
Has anybody here had this happen to them before? How would one go about diagnosing this problem? Can the fuel tank be taken apart easily or would it need to be cut open?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike
