Saab recommends NOT to use synthetic oil in the tranny. Here's the blurb from the saabusa.com FAQ:
As long as the oil meets the API ratings as described in the owner's manual, and the oil changes are performed at Saab's recommended intervals, synthetic oil should be fine as an engine oil. However, the bonding properties of synthetic oils can be detrimental to the synchronizers of the transmission, therefore synthetic oil should not be used in the gear box.
Having said that, it seems like the guys over at Redline are smart enough to have figured that out. Here's a blub from their web site:
MT-90 Manual Transmission Lubricant, a 75W90 GL-4 gear oil designed for use in manual transmissions and transaxles. Provides excellent protection of gears and synchronizers and its balanced slipperiness provides a perfect coefficient of friction, allowing easier shifting.
Therefore, my guess is that it Saab does not use synthetic as the factory fill, but it is probably ok to use Redline as long as either the 70W80 (Redline MTL) or 75W90 (Redline MT-90) weight is appropriate. I don't know what weight Saab recommends.
This is all just my conjecture. Does anybody have real experience with this?
