Hi all,

I took a look at the faqs but didn't see much about the newer 9-5s, so I thought an introduction would be in order before pestering you with newbie questions. I currently drive a wonderful car (a pristine 1988 BMW M5) that I am selling to get a car with airbags and other safety features. I'm interested in purchasing a 9-5 Aero, most likely with a manual transmission and in a dark color, and most likely in the next few weeks. This much I'm pretty confidant about so I'm here to cram in as much research as possible before buying in hopes of avoiding costly mistakes. Here's what I don't know:

I've lurked here for a few days and read a few posts about an oil issue with the 4 cylinder engines, but I haven't found a difinitive answer about which years/models were affected. I want the four cylinder high pressure turbo - is that engine (model years 2000 - 2003) affected?

Were there any major safety advances between 2000 and 2003?

Just curious, as I haven't followed Saabs - when did GM get involved, and how much involvement did they have with the design/build and supply of parts for these Aeros?

I test drove a 9-5 SE automatic a few weeks ago (2003 model) and liked the car quite a bit, except for the transmission. It wasn't very smooth, and made the car feel a bit sluggish until the boost was on. Perhaps it was just this car, and not indicitive of auto transmissions on the Aero, but still I think I will enjoy a manual more. Are there any quirks or problems with the manual transmission that I should be aware of? The manual seems to be an unpopular option, which seems odd for a sporting sedan.

I've checked out SAABway's web site, and they are a candidate for me to explore for purchase. I may take a trip to see them if I can't find a car locally. If you have experience with them that you can share, please do so (via e-mail if you prefer), or if you can suggest another dealer I'd appreciate it.

Lastly, I live in Raleigh, NC, so if anyone reading this is near me and has an Aero I'd sure like to meet you and check out your car. I've seen them only on the internet, so some first hand experience would be greatly appreciated. Beer, coffee, whatever, is on me. Oh, and you can drive my M5 if you want. :-)

Thanks,

Jeff

Okay, just so I don't get a rep for taking without giving, here's a pic of my car that's leaving me soon (if the buyer doesn't flake out on me). If it had airbags I'd keep it, but that's life! :-)
