Your car can tell you the code.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Rear shocks, Clay, Fri, 4 Mar 2005 14:37:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Under the hood, on the driver's side of the car, you will see a plate riveted to the fender with three lines of information. The top line just says Saab Automobiles AB. The middle line contains the car's VIN. The bottom line is the factory suspension information for your specific car, it will contain 6 short alpha/numeric codes separated by hyphens.
The very last code (reading left to right) is the factory code for your rear shocks. You can call your Dealership Parts counter, or any supplier of Saab parts, with this digit(s) and be certain of receiving the proper shocks for your car. Some aftermarket companies may have a "one shock fits all" part for the 9-5, differentiating only between Sedan and Wagon.
Rear shocks can be a D-I-Y replacement, many have done it. I tried and failed (see following item #1). Some advice I wish I had heard first: 1) You must either have access to an impact wrench to remove the top nut on the shock (bayonet style mount), OR you must wire-brush the rusted shock stem very clean before attempting to remove this nut with non-impact tools. 2) Saab shocks (factory installed and Sach's OEM replacements) are gas charged. You will nedd a second jack pushing against the bottom shock eye to compress the shock sufficiently to allow you to re-insert the bottom bolt. After-market performance shocks are often not gas charged and won't have this issue.
