The remote and the key do the same thing - except the remote allows you to do it farther away. You can lock the car with the key and unlock it with the remote. Or lock the car with the remote, and unlock it with the key.
This is still 'safe'. You can't start the car without the key. There is a chip in the key that the car reads. The reader is in the ignition switch.
Where are you located? There are different alarm systems in different countries. The alarm systems in Europe tend to be 'more strict' than in the US. The NG900 had a very 'strict' alarm system. So strict, that with the NG900, it was possible to mess up so that even the dealer couldn't get the car to start.
