windshield reflective sunshades: good or bad?

I always have used a reflective sunshade for front windshield. Why? b/c I grew up seeing old 70s 80s cars' dashes crack and crumble, including my '83 900. but, do we need them anymore for this purpose? Sure there's another purpose: keeping interior temps down when we first get in car. but, are these things causing any potential damage to the headliner at the very front at the windshield from even more excessive reflected light/heat? An engineer friend of mine that used to be with GM said that today's dash materials are made to deal with the sunlight and thus we no longer need to cover them. better living through better chemicals I'm sure. he no longer drives GM's BTW, just Ford and Toyota!! additionally, my old '94 900 headliner became unglued all along the edge of the windshield. I've heard some speculation that sun reflectors are protecting the dash but redirecting a lot of heat back on to the headliner along the windshield and causing it to dry up, rot or what have you. so, anyone for taking up this debate? pros/cons/facts? I just inherited my '99 9-5 from my wife and now it will park outside all day in the hot south FL sun.
