auto-leveling -- any reason why it wouldn't work?

I went to home depot yesterday and probably had about 250 lbs in the trunk of my '00 SE wgn. When I got home, I went into the house before unloading. When I came out and looked at the car from the side, the back end was defintely sitting lower than the front from the weight of the stuff inside. Driving home, I really didn't notice too much of a difference in the ride with the back end sitting lower, but it was quite obvious that there was no auto-leveling happening.
Is this a sign of suspension wear, or could there be another cause?
Thanks.
