I agree with your comments. I was very impressed with the P-Zero Rosso tires at the Aero Academy. The purchase of the P-Zero Nero M+S was not to save money, and not to act as a substitute for a snow tire. I initially intended to buy new Rossos, until I did a little research. Rossos and Neros are both considered “ultra high performance” tires by the manufacturer. Both carry a W speed rating (168 mph max.). The Nero has a 91 load rating (1,356 lbs. max), while the Rosso has a slightly higher 94 load rating (1,477 lbs. max).
P-Zero Rosso was launched in 2000, and P-Zero Nero was launched in 2002. The primary difference is in the compound used to manufacture the tire, and the tread pattern. The Neros feature stable outer tread blocks, combined with notched continuous center grooves over the body of the tire to improve mechanical traction, as opposed to the design of the Rossos which features three “zones” of performance: hard outer edge, semi-slick central rib with curved grooves and open inner shoulder. Both tires feature an asymmetric tread pattern. The Nero was designed specifically for the US market, and is intended to be used in the changing climates found in the US, including LIGHT snow. It is not a substitute for a snow tire. The Rosso is designed to be a dedicated summer tire, with maximum performance in summer conditions.
After comprehensive reviews of manufacturer data, customer reviews and comments on this board, I decided to try the Neros. The Neros are $126 each at the Tire Rack, as opposed to the Rossos at $149 each. Not a significant difference. Customer reviews of both tires were more favorable for the Neros in all categories, including dry traction. Categories reviewed included: dry traction, wet traction, hydro resistance, snow traction, cornering stability, steering response, ride comfort, noise comfort and tread wear. So, my plan is to give them a try, and if I don’t like them, I’ll go back to the Rossos. Again, I was very happy with the Rossos, I’m just trying something new. I don’t expect to replace snow tires with the Neros, but I do expect them to be helpful in transitional months during the spring and fall.
I believe that if you wanna play, you gotta pay. Putting cheap tires on an Aero is ridiculous, and I don’t feel that is what I am doing here.
