The cause of much doom and gloom.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Late model Saab turbos have their ignitinon coils all in one cassette unit on top of the engine. Saab invented coil on plug ignitions systems that practically all cars use lately. It's called Direct Ignition and it's contained in a Cassette, you can't replace individual coils, so it's a DIC or direct ignition cassette.
When a coil fails in a Saab it's a cinch to replace the whole cassette with just a torx driver so the analytical pessimists would recommend that you purchase a $300ish spare DIC to carry just in case yours fails as it'll leave you stranded and it's something most DIYers (do it yourselfers as you're already having trouble with acronyms) can do themselves on the side of the road.
I call 'em DIC Gloomers. They're attitude is not if but when and Saab shoulda' never built such a poor quality expensive component.
Fact is coils fail in all modern cars. Putting the coil right on the plug is great for the spark, but exposes the coil to engine heat hastening failure in all brands. Audi had this occur in large numbers and had to mount an offcial recal to replace them all.
Saab hasn't approached the epic proportions of Audi coil failures, but it does happen in an otherwise reliable car and that makes it stick out, but the DIC Gloomers would have you believe you're a fool if you don't buy into their premise that the DIC will fail and leave you stranded. It casts a pall over Saab reliability that is underved and full of gloom and doom.
I visualize a guy in rags and sandals with a sign proclaiming "The End is Near" unless you carry a spare DIC.......
