So did a corvette I once owned. Often it's because the valve stem seals wear out. Without combustion chamber pressure the valves aren't tightly seated in the cylinder head and a little oil will seep into the cylinders from the valve train when the engine is at rest. When the engine starts, it burns the oil off. It really has no adverse affect on the engine
The Kohler engine in my John Deere used to kick up quite a cloud of smoke, and the vette put out a bit less. Never had any serious trouble with either engine though.
