We moved from Charlotte back to L.A. about five years ago. I had been transfered from Hong Kong to Charlotte by my then employer (B*nk of Am*r*ca). Right after we moved into our new house, I was laid off. As part of the severance package, I was able ot get them to ship our two cars back to our original home in the Los Angeles area.
My wife's 1993 Volvo 850GLT left first and arrived on schedule, in good shape, clean and undamaged. The transporter was a "company" truck. Everything was by the book.
My Saab (the 1996 900SET) left a week later and arrived ten days late because the driver (a contractor driving his own truck for hire to the contractor) had to divert from Phoenix to Seattle and then back to L.A., then his truck broke down somewhere en route. When the car finally arrived, it was 11:00pm. The car was unbelievably filthy becuase the car above it for the last week had been leaking oil onto the Saab's hood and RH front fender. Also, the battery was dead. He jump started it on the carrier, backed it off, and gave me the receipt form to sign. All the while regaling me with a lot of offensive political and ethnic comspiracy theories. I signed the form, but crossed out the boilerplate about having received the car in good order, instead writing in above my signature that I was unable to inspect the car due to the late hour and filthy condition, so I reserved all my rights.
It took a while to get all the gunk off the car, but underneath it looked fine and ran fine. I got an apology from the contractor later, and all seemed well.
About two years later, the clearcoat paint began to bubble up and flake off in the same areas where the oily gunk had been thickest. No way to forsee that at the time, I guess. Also not sure what lessons there are for you in the process. One went fine, one was a big a headache. If I had it to do over again, and wasn't in such a hurry to get to my new job back in L.A., I might have driven one of them out here myself.
Good luck, and YMMV.
/Geoff
