It's funny that Saab Cars USA can have some "loose guns" dealership running around pouring non authorized fluid in the cars?
Or did you specifically ask for Synthetic ATF and the dealer wrote a disclaimer on the invoice that the warranty is null and void?
Yes, the factory manual states in harsh language that synthetic ATF is bad for the transmission.
As Dick in Falls Church mention it is most likely because they haven't bothered to get an synthetic ATF rated for the Saabs yet.
As soon as they have a bottle with Saab logo on it is ok to use.
I beleive that this failure was just a freak incident since as you mention, these transmission are fairly common and seem to last a long time.
Volvo use a very similar transmission (AW50-42) and it holds up ok. I have seen more Volvo trannys fail though but I attribute that to that fluid never being changed and it is a lot more Volvo cars out on the road.
