'99 9-5 - CEL, high idle, jumpy when on/off throttle?

On my way to work this morning and all of a sudden my '99 9-5 2.3lpt (90,000 miles) starts behaving strangely.
First, some clicking from the dashboard area. The clicking stops and is followed by the 'CHECK ENGINE' light coming on. That is accompanied by a dip in the idle which caused me to have to rev up the engine to keep it running.
Once moving in traffic again, I noticed the car is REALLY sensitive to me taking my foot on or off the gas pedal. A noticeable jump/surge when I place my foot on the gas, and a noticeable dip when taking my foot off the gas.
After restarting the car, it is idling at around 1300 - 1400 RPM, still has the CHECK ENGINE light on, and still still responding sensitively to my foot being on or off the gas. Overall, things feel very loose with the car all of a sudden. No smoke, unusual noises, or leaking fluids are apparent.
Any idea what I might be looking at here? Should I avoid driving it completely, even to my mechanic (who is 12 miles away)?
Any advice would be appreciated - Cheers
sonique

DIC replaced at 80,000 miles; 90K service completed about 1,500 miles ago; now using Mobil 1 0W-40 synthetic.
