I searched the archives for brake switch fixes and couldn't find any. So, this is for reference; and thanks to JPW for the idea (I really didn't know what was going on).
Brake lights would all light only once in maybe 20 tries of the brake pedal. When the lights did come on, all three lights worked fine. But mostly nothing. The brake switch ended up being the problem.
To take the brake switch off, you need to remove the three torx screws from the panel under the steering wheel/column. I broke a plastic pin holder while pulling the panel down, but not really a problem. Pull down panel and crawl underneath looking up at the brake pedal.
Brake pedal has two switches that it engages/disengages. One is black (brake lights) and one is green (cruise control disable) - I did get this info from the archives.
I changed the black one (about $18 at the dealer). You need to pry the ears outwards and pull back on the electrical wire harness that attaches to it. The hardest part was next - you need to rotate the actual switch 90 degrees (counterclockwise I believe), then pull it through the hole (this was discovered while using my wife's makeup mirror to figure out how the switch was attached). I needed pliers to turn it the 90 degrees, and for the reverse when installing the new switch. When the new switch is installed, reattached the wiring harness and you are done.
Without ever looking under my dash before, I changed this in about 15 minutes. I think the plunger for the switch is adjustable, but I'm not sure - dealer thought it was.
