Wray's suggestion was a lifesaver. . . Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Fri, 22 Apr 2005 17:17:37 In Reply to: that bolt . . ., Ben H., Fri, 22 Apr 2005 06:52:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
although it still took quite a while. Wray's suggestions is to install the bolt in the pulley while on your bench, then use two pieces of duct tape criss-crossed over the head to secure it within the pulley. This turns the pulley/bolt combination into a crude hand-wheel and you actually use the pulley O.D. to initially tighten the bolt.
Two caveats:
1) Only wrap the tape up onto the pulley rim, and not all the way around onto the inside surface of the pulley. Also double over each end of the tape 1/8-inch or so. This way you can grab the ends of the tape with needle nose pliers to pull it off the pulley after the bolt is partially tightened.
2) You still have to be very careful aligning the STEEL bolt into the threaded ALUMINUM boss on the engine face plate. A misalignment could result in cross-threading the threaded boss! Since you are doing this blind due to extremely limited clearance, the alignment is particularly frustrating.
