So I join the failed DIC ranks. At least it didn't die completely while driving and we could get it to the dealer. I was quoted about $750.
I will pass this on--it does not hurt to call SaabUSA and ask.
Apparently, they unofficially know they have a major problem here. Since my car, while 5 years 5 months is beyond warranty, is also only 35,850 miles. And this sure seems to be an item that should last based on operating time, not calendar time.
So I called after I got the bad news, groused politely (you all don't know me, that's a hard thing for me to do!), probably stuck in the phrase "class action" somewhere, and after 5 or 10 minutes on hold while they spoke to the dealer, Saab agreed to pay for the part, leaving me only the labor (propriety probably says I should not post my final bill).
I'd say that was a pretty fair deal under the circumstances.
My wife has the car home already and reported it drove just fine after the switch.
Thanks to those who gave me their suggestions.
