Wear doesn't kill cars lately....... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: What is the engine life span of a 9-5 on average?, MBrown9-5, Sun, 24 Apr 2005 22:04:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
As R&T points out in their oil change interval article, it's not wear stuff that determines the life of a modern automobile.
It's my experience that modern engines from any manufacturer, Hyundai to Mercedes and Saab, don't have the wear issues of previous generations of cars. Since unleaded gas, modern aluminum, steel and even improved cast iron engine components and the advent of detergent oil, just about any engine will go 250,000 miles before *wear* issues like lack of compression from worn rings or lower end knocks or cam bearings or anything else wearing out.
There's always gonna' be the occassional water pump, gasket or manifold leak or something, but the rings, bearings and valves are going to last and last in any modern engine. Now with full synthetic oil, I doubt you'll ever be able to "wear out" a modern car.
The rest of a 9-5 is an example of the heavy Swedish craftsmanship and construction, plastic, leather, paint and steel that reflects the manufacturing of an autombile where others only test their cars.
