You have to keep in mind that the dealer cannot not recommend things (extra service items) on a regular basis that the car manufacturer does not cover in the maintenance list.
It would open up the car maker for litigations if it became known that certain things break so often that it needs to be replaced more frequently.
Not until the car maker sends out new directives can the dealer recommend/replace parts.

Saab have maintained for decades that the transmissions are "filled for life" even though that back in the 80s and 90s we rebuilt lots of manual transmissions on the 900 due to metal particles being circulated through the bearings (metal pieces were knocked of the reverse gear).

You also need to keep in mind that car makers of today are banking on that not too many cars will fail within a certain year/mile interval and therefore it will not be enough voices raised so that they end up having to compensate the owners for early repairs.

Sometimes their calculations goes wrong and a big number of cars (eg, a certain part) breaks down prematurely and that's when they come out with service bulletins and in the worst case scenario for the car maker, a mandatory recall.

As for the transmission fluid, I see no reason to drive around with a dirty fluid when it is so easy to drain it and have new one put in ones in awhile, and my recommendations is to change the transmission fluids every 30,000 miles.

Is your 2003 an early or late model? You can tell by looking at the manufacturing date on the driver door.
It is several software updates (Trionic and TCM ECUs) for the early 2003 models and one of the update deals with C/E light coming on when no real fault is present (fault code P0725 in TCM).
The other software update is to help diagnose misfire problems and a third one is for the transmission computer (TCM).
