It's still not easy but yes they don't have to drop the engine all the way down to the floor but just as much so that the front engine cover comes free from the car frame.
Can't really say how much stuff they can leave connected and what needs to be removed.
Keep in mind that the dealer have some really nifty hydraulic lift tables with special adapters to hold the engine/transmission in place when lowering down so for a person doing it on the garage floor it would not be an easy operation.
How come you need timing and balance chains on the car?
