There have always been numerous contradictions between Saab 9-5
maintenance recommendations and 9-5 maintenance practices. Chief among
them is the recommendation for oil which meets ACEA A3/B3 while only
paying for oil which meets ACEA A1/B1 for scheduled maintenance.
Now, with the oil sludge warranty letter, the recommendation is for
fully synthetic motor oil but again the oil which is used for scheduled
maintenance is only synthetic blend.
So, the cost to Saab for oil sludge problems and issuance of 8 year
unlimited mile warranty could be limited to not much more than the cost
of ink, paper and postage because only some of us have insisted on
paying for fully synthetic oil. And, even with Mobil 1, only 0W-40 and
15W-50 are documented to meet ACEA A3/B3, although 5W-40 probably would
meet ACEA A3/B3 if Exxon Mobil would pay for the expensive ACEA testing.
So, even for people who insisted on paying extra for fully synthetic
Saab 0W-30 at 5,000 mile intervals could be told that they are not
covered since manual clearly states that the oil should meet ACEA A3/B3,
but Saab 0W-30 fully synthetic oil only meets ACEA A5/B5.
Chances are if you can document oil changes at intervals of no more than
10,0000 miles with at least synthetic blend oil meeting at least ACEA
A1/B1, chances are your oil sludge problem will be covered under 8 year
warranty, but the loop-hole still exists due to Saab regular maitenance
not following its own maintenance guidelines as set forth in owner's
manual.
I haven't had oil sludge problems and don't expect any. Then again, I'm
something of an oil nerd and spent good money on oil analysis :-)
Cheers,
Jae
