A couple of comments on my experience with snow in eastern Washington State and my 2002 9-5 Aero.
First, I use snow tires--absolutely essential compared to the 17" performance tires that came with the car.
The Aero has a low stance so I am aware of avoiding deep, particularly frozen, sludge and ruts. I have not driven in very deep fresh snow, so I don't know the performance.
I also carry chains--which can be required on the passes in severe conditions. I have never put them on the car and never gotten stuck. We also have a Grand Cherokee with snow tires as well. I feel more stable and in control in the Saab, but could get out of stuck conditions, deep snow, or steep hills better with the 4-wheel drive Jeep.
I might suggest doing a search on which snow tires to use and it makes for interesting conversation on the messages.
Learning the techniques for driving front-wheel drive vehicles on slick conditions is important. For example, the car does much better pulling (some throttle) than engine breaking (at least from my own driving).
