Engine Removal Necessary?

Short history -- PO had low oil pressure, dealer did a chemical clean, cleaned the pan twice, installed a new oil pump and timing cover, oil pressure was ok after that for about 10 minutes then started to drop. Dealer gave up, no warranty, PO gave it to me to work on. Since the oil pump/timing cover was already replaced I'm assuming we're looking at more sludge and probably at least main bearings. I've read previous posts on engine removal without a four point hoist and it doesn't sound pretty. Does anyone know if the mains and rods can be done with the block in the car, head and pan off? I figure this would give me enough access to get most of the sludge out -- comments? Thanks!
