It only takes one of the lead plates to fall down and short out the grid inside the battery.
Batteries can go bad suddenly in a lot of strange ways and today's modern cars are a lot more sensitive to voltage disruptions since they use so many computers to run the car.
Computers needs what's sometimes called a "life sustaining voltage level". When the voltage drops below that level the computer just "packs up and go home". So even if the same battery would have started an old fashioned car without alarm and immobilizer and all the goodies, it is not enough to turn your 2004 on.
