I'll give one possible scenario which admittedly involves some risk:
Go ahead and let the dealer inspect under the valve cover BEFORE removing the oil pan. Have them check the cam bearing/caps. If there is no evidence of metal damage, let them remove the pan and check for metal shavings($500 seems fair considering the work to be done-I'm assuming this includes removing the pickup tube/screen and oil pressure sensor, along with the valve cover). **be aware that once you start down this path you're pretty much committing to repairs**. Once you have these inspections done and know the condition of the engine, get the dealer to call SAAB and see if they will cover the repairs based on your maintenance history. If they will not, contact the customer assistance center and have a file opened on your vehicle. Either way, the longer you drive the vehicle at this point the more likely it is for extensive damage.
Two things you left out:
1)How many miles are on your vehicle now?
2)You said you missed one oil change-are the remainders at 10k intervals or 5k intervals? In all fairness, if you're doing 10k intervals and missed one, that means you went 20k miles on an oil change(?)
