I think of onstar more of a installed cell phone rather than some life-saving insurance policy. I have an old nokia cell phone that I cancelled the contract on. If I turn it on, it says no service. If I dial 911 with it, nothing will happen.
I agree that Saab/GM should include lifetime airbag deployment notification with the onstar system, and charge for everything else. But I don't think they could or should be held liable if you cancel your service.
Remember, they aren't depriving you of something that everyone else on the road has. Airbag deployment notification isn't something you are entitled to because you are on the road. It's a service that right now you have to pay for. Hopefully in the future that will change.
