I got new Toyo Proxes for my 9-5 a few months back. The dealer siped them without my permission. So they didn't charge me to have them siped. Nevertheless, the tires seem to perform well. I could have taken them back for a full refund or had them replaced with non-siped Proxes within the first 30 days. I kept the siped tires.
Are they quiet? On certain roads at low speeds I think I can hear the tires. I don't think I buy the idea that they're quieter, but any sounds that I hear from mine are ignorable and no match for the Harmon Kardon sound system.
Better traction? They do have good traction. But better than the same tire without siping? I don't know.
I've read one study online that said siping can turn some all season tires into the equivalent of Winter tires. Siping is supposedly helpful if you live in a rainy climate.
Siping supposedly originated in the trucking industry. Someone figured out that by siping tires on their rig, they get slighly better traction and gas mileage is a tinge better. A small amount of gas savings for you or I might yield a shoulder shrug, but compound that savings across an entire fleet of trucks and you've got a mandate to sipe all tires in the fleet.
On the other hand, I recall reading that Consumer Reports says not to sipe your tires. My brother in law used to work for a tire shop and says tire shops love to sell people siping because it's pure profit for the tire shop, but if siping really mattered on your tires, the tire factory would design the tires with them in the first place. Tire companies weren't born yesterday.
If I had to buy new tires today would I pay extra for siping? Probably not.
