Question: Why own a small engine capacity vehicle? Posted by Shaun [Email] (#683) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Shaun) on Mon, 30 May 2005 21:28:26 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hey guys...
Noticed that cars in CONUS tend to have pretty high engine displacements that make long cross country trips very comfortable and are somewhat affordable due to cheap(its all relative, US$0.96/L or US$3.63/gallon over here) gas.
Given the laws of physics, the small 2.0l or 2.3l engine has to do 'work' haul around a rather large chunk of automobile and i was wondering WHAT SORT of FUEL CONSUMPTION you guys would get from the SUVs, Ford Mustangs and Lincolns that are in the US.
There have been a number of BMW owners past and present whove owned 330,530, 745 maybe, and I was wondering what sort of fuel economy you get on those cars.
Personally, i get around 19.3mpg using Esso Synergy 98 petrol with a mix of urban and light highway driving.
Are the fuel savings very great? Or do you guys not enjoy driving naturally aspirated engines like the Alfa Romeo 147GTAs sweet 3.2l V6 or the 4.6l engine of a Porsche?
The strong disincentive from owning large displacement vehicles comes from the high yearly road tax we pay.
For a 1985cc 9-5 2.0, i pay US$920 per annum in road tax.
To own say one of those 5.0 V8 pickups, would be abt US$4240 p.a
1 S$=1.66US$
Road Tax Formula
Engine Capacity (EC) Road Tax Formula* (per annum)
EC<=600 cc S$400
600 cc < EC <= 1000 cc S$400 + 0.25 x (EC - 600)
1000 cc < EC <= 1600 cc S$500 + 0.75 x (EC - 1000)
1600 cc < EC <= 3000 cc S$950 + 1.5 x (EC - 1600)
EC > 3000 cc S$3050 + 2.0 x (EC - 3000)
* Effective from 1 September 2002.
Cheers,
Shaun
