Yeah I haven't thought so much about the two different oil pump styles more than that they are different.
Don't know if you were around Saabs back in the early 80s?
With the 8V H engine, Saab introduced the first generation of that pump with sharp teeth. They also had problems with the machine jig that drilled the holes for the two dowel pins that centered the outer oil pump housing to the front engine cover.
The holes were not drilled perfectly and the oil pump housing and gears (especially the inner drive gear) didn't seat properly and the engine lost oil pressure (cavitation syndrome)and the inner gear wore out prematurely.
The fix was to pull out and discard the two dowel pins and use a special tool that fitted perfectly on the crank shaft and into the hole where the crank shaft seal resides, line up everything and install all M6 bolts and tighten it together and presto, you had oil pressure again.
So yes, back in those days it was crucial that the gears were lined up perfect.
