You're right, the jury is still out for me on the performance benefits - from what I understand, the cross-drilled and/or slotted are a throwback to the racing circuit when pads where made of a material that would emit certain gases, pushes the pad away from the rotor during excessive braking. Today, the pads are no longer made of the same materials, so the the effect is negligible. Add to that the warping tendencies of cross-drilled due to improper manufacture in the aftermarket sector, and it may even be a 'downgrade' performance wise. I've also heard that certain slotted rotors will act like a cheese grater when combined with certain pads, so there's another caveat to contend with.
All in all, the car brakes perfectly fine now - the main issue with me, albeit a shallow one - is the aesthetic factor. It's time to replace my front rotors anyway, so I was looking into an aftermarket performance (using that loosely) rotor. If it's not worth the hassle then I will settle on stock rotors for the front and rear and be satisfied in the end either way. We drive a great car and have an outstanding community here. Happy SAABing!
