Well I have had a used black with blond leather MY99 9-5 Wagon for about a year and a half, and have run it about 15000 miles (25000km) and if you check my posts to the board, you can see that there were a few little things that were annoying, but the wisdom of the board helped solve them!
I am generally satisfied with it. I am an engineer, so I tend to go for preventive maintenance rather than reacting to a crisis, which meant that I did pick up a spare DIC and CPS, but as you way you are already familiar with 9-5s.
Check the maintenance records carefully. Mine had some kind of minor accident before I bought it in 2004, but the repairs were well done. I did get the engine flushed twice and plan on keeping ahead of the sludge issue.
Try to get the pull-out cargo floor accessory - it is really great when you need a spot to sit and put your boots on, or just to sit and have a sandwich. I appreciate the roll up cargo net that is place on the rear seat backs, to prevent things flying into the back of your head in a panic stop.
I invested in the SAAB roof racks, and put a fat Thule on top, more or less permanently since I do a minimum number of highway miles, and when I do, I need it there for the gear (we have 15 month-old twin boys).
If you can, spring for the GMPP warranty, the extension, if possible. The right headlight washer motor was intermittent, and the warranty made it possible to change this relatively non-essential device.
By the way, I was looking at a BMW 535i Wagon in traffic the other day, and my MY99 is just as cool, and believe me, nobody can tell it is a six year-old vehicle, it looks new.
As Mike Lynch says, the coolest people drives SportsWagons.
By the way, Ian Glenday is the man to ask about MY99s, but you probably already know that!
Cheers,
