1999 9-5 V6, timing belt replaced by Saab at 60k miles, tensioner failed at 79k miles.

Please replace the tensioner assembly when you change your V6 timing belt. I was not told to do so by the Saab dealer when they changed my belt for "free" 2 years ago. I just paid $4486 to have my car repaired when the tensioner failed. I received no "goodwill" from Saab. In fact I have yet to receive a response from Saab GM Jay Spenchian to a letter I sent him on Friday May 13th.

Once Saab did not offer any assistance, I had the car towed a second time to an independent Saab shop. My days of dealing w/ the Saab dealer are now over.

I now have new (used) cylinder heads, tensioner bracket, timing belt, thermostat, waterpump, etc. Labor was $1520, Parts $2650. They did not recommend sending the heads to a machine shop so I just went w/ their opinion.

I'm glad to have the car back but sick about spending so much money. The car is running fine now- no noticeable difference from prior to tensioner failing. Somehow the repair shop did break the driver side plastic molding around the seats with the seat adjustments buttons on it. It is now hanging from the seat and looks bad. I tried the duct tape repair but could not get it to stay. I'm not sure how they did that. I'm guessing the person who detailed the car (which was a nice touch for spending $4400) broke it when they were cleaning the car.

I hate to further hurt V6 resale value but I want everyone to know what happened to me. I'm guessing it is worth having the tensioner fixed if you didn't do it when you replaced the timing belt. I'd rather pay $700 or whatever that would cost vs. $4500. Good luck to everyone.
